Straits International School Rawang is the second Straits International School in Malaysia, the first being at Penang and called Straits International School Penang (SIS). The school offers the Cambridge International Curriculum to students of primary, middle school and secondary levels.
The school’s motto of “Non Mihi, Non Tibi, Sed Nobis” which is Latin for “Not For Me, Not For You, But For Us” and reflects the mission of SIS education, which is to develop in all their students a sense of community spirit that empowers them to become compassionate and well balanced citizens. As such, a commitment to the community and the performance of service is the cornerstone of an education at SIS.
Community work exists in many ways at the school and takes form in various activities. Through ‘hands on’ service learning, the student body develops a sense of self, improves their cultural understanding and helps to create a better, healthier school environment for all who walk through its gates.
Straits International School Rawang offers subjects such as Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE), Art, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Music, Speech, Drama, History and Geography to all students. Secondary students are offered a subject named Business which is taught using a special programme designed by the school’s specialist staff.
All Malaysian students study Bahasa Malaysia, Malaysian History and Moral Studies, while Mandarin is compulsory for all students at the school either as a first or second language. All Muslim students are given Islamic Tuition. Straits International School offers the IGCSE options package to students of Years 10 and 11.
The curriculum in many subjects is ‘internationalised’ to suite the Asian setting. The school puts immense emphasis on project work which they believe helps in development of critical skills such as independent thinking, presentations, group work and research.
SIS hires both foreign and local teachers who are certified in teaching the British Cambridge curriculum, and are experienced in teaching the coursework in various countries around the world. All the form tutors and Heads of Year are expatriates and they actively teach English, various Humanities subjects such as World History and Geography, as well as some of the other selected subjects as per their individual expertise.
Apart from the curriculum, Straits International School Rawang also concentrates on the development of the students’ personal, social, health, education, art, information, communication technology, music, drama, speech and a host of other associated skills. The campus is well-featured with CCTV surveillance both inside and outside of the building, as well as 24 hours a day security guard patrol to ensure all areas are monitored all the time.
