The opening of Tenby International School Miri (also TIS Miri) marked the first time that the Tenby patented style of international education became available to both expatriates and Malaysians that were living or based in and around Miri, Sarawak.
The Tenby Group of Schools is a group of international and local schools in Malaysia which has won many awards and recognition. The group has been operating for more than 50 years in Malaysia and providing quality education to local and international students. Another successful Tenby School located in Malaysia (one of ten countries that Tenby Schools are found in) is the Tenby International School Penang.
The school strives to provide academic excellence and prepares students for competing in the fast-changing world. The school intends to make students confident. The group encourages cultural diversity and teaches students to be tolerant and respectful of each other.
Tenby Schools was selected by Sarawak Shell Berhad to start an international school in Miri to provide international school education to the community of Miri, Sarawak. TIS Miri offers classes from Early Years up to Secondary and moved to purpose-built new facilities in Senadin in September 2013.
Tenby International School Penang offers a nurturing environment and endless opportunities for academic achievement and personal success, whether choosing to follow the British international or private Malaysian national curriculum systems. The school makes use of its expertise, modern facilities and a variety of co-curricular activities to enable each and every student to thrive.
Starting off with the Early Years level, the school has created a secure, rich and stimulating learning environment that supports and values children. There are well-equipped outdoor and indoor areas providing opportunities for children to both run around and learn by exploration. Early Years learning is via a combination of learning experiences directed by teachers, teacher-enhanced learning activities and play activities initiated by children.
The International Primary Curriculum (“IPC”) is used in all Tenby Schools, and is now the curriculum of choice for international and national schools around the world. The IPC is an interactive, comprehensive, thematic program for three to eleven year-olds with an international bent.
Through the IPC learning approach, children develop the awareness, skills, and understanding needed to face tomorrow’s world with trust. The IPC was released in 2000, and has been effectively addressing children’s learning needs for many years.
At the Secondary School stage, on the other hand, is an increasingly formal educational time for the students, and all subjects are taught by professional English teachers. The school follows the National Curriculum for England at Key Stage 3 (Year 7 to 9), properly adapted for international students.
Both student bodies study Geography, History, Design-Technology, Music, Drama, Physical Education, Art and Modern Foreign Language (MFL) as well as the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Information Communication Technology (ICT). External assessment at the end of Key Stage 3 is performed through the CIE controlled Checkpoint exam.
Students choose from a range of subjects from the groups Languages, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, Technology and Arts at Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11), leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exam.
Tenby pupils choose from a wide selection of co-curricular activities (CCAs) including sports clubs, sciences, and art. These CCAs are a great way to expand current passions and abilities, and to acquire new ones. Activities are offered to Year One and above students, and are held from 3 to 4 pm after school.
