Westlake International School

Westlake International School was started with the vision to transform minds and change lives in the pursuit of excellence. Nearly a decade into our operations, it’s an excellent time to take stock of where we stand in terms of our students or school’s performance in comparison with the affordable fees that we offer. The school is proud that our students have achieved outstanding results in high-stakes examinations, participated in international events and gained admissions to the Top 100 universities in the world.

Here at Westlake International School, we have been embracing the challenge of leveraging technology to enhance our students’ learning experience. Starting in 2019, we adopted Google Suite for Education as the technology learning platform for the school. Alongside this, all students in secondary school are equipped with a school determined device (Microsoft Surface Go), and in primary, school-based tablets are integrated into the classroom learning environment. In addition, the school subscribes to a range of additional learning applications to allow students to engage in the 4Cs of 21st Century Learning; Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity and Communication. Our Teachers are Google Educator Certified in addition to their Cambridge Subject-based qualifications to ensure that we deliver high-quality learning experiences in school or online.

As a Boarding School of repute, our purpose-built campus overlooking a serene lake nestled within the Kinta Valley mountain range offers students the perfect environment to focus and flourish. The wide range of programmes in school and boarding are designed to nurture each individual’s unique talents. With a strong emphasis on character development, we aim to graduate lifelong learners with the values that will allow them to be successful members of their community.

We are an associate member of the Boarding Schools’ Association UK. Over the years, we have moulded boarders to be independent learners and provided them with the necessary life skills needed when they leave the nest. The boarding house upholds a culture of discipline. Boarders as young as 10 years old are taught time management and self-management and are entrusted with the privilege of making decisions daily with their Boarding House Parents’ guidance. They develop integrity through learning to be a trustworthy friend to others and to do the right thing even when no one is looking.

Being a boarder means more time for meaningful activities. As the boarding houses are located within the school’s vicinity, a walk to classes would take less than 5 minutes, and they have access to the school’s sports facilities for after-school activities. Non-sports driven boarders are given the opportunity to take up other skill-based activities such as learning a musical instrument, learning to cook, or taking up handicrafts.

These activities that the boarders take up are not just for them to unwind after a long day but also allow for well-rounded development. Besides, if a boarder has already signed up for the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, these activities contribute to the Physical Recreation and Skill aspects. In essence, they need not worry about planning their physical or skill-based activities as the boarding house daily schedule has it covered.

Recreational activities aside, time for revision and academic coaching are allocated daily to ensure consistency in a boarder’s academic progression. Teachers from Westlake International School are assigned a group each to provide the necessary guidance needed.

Our boarders, or rather their parents, have the option of choosing whether they want to be a 5-day boarder or a 7-day boarder. 5-day boarders go home for the weekend while 7-day boarders stay for the weekend. On weekends, 7-day boarders have it free and easy for most of the day except for revision and academic coaching. Excursions are organised every month, and activities include jungle trekking, visiting historical sites, or even visiting a mall. 7-day boarders also get to enjoy a night swim every Friday at the school’s swimming pool.

On Sunday evenings, the boarders attend assertive mentoring sessions with their Boarding House Parents. These sessions include character development topics such as boundaries, screen time, habits, productivity strategies and many more.

Boarders are allocated either a single room or a twin room. During the pandemic and with safety in mind, all boarders are assigned a single room. Each room comes with an attached bathroom; hence they do not have to worry about privacy. There are chillout areas, study rooms, a cooking place within the boarding house, enough places to keep a boarder occupied within the boarding house. All boarding houses are locked after lights out, and 24-hour security personnel is deployed, ensuring the students’ safety.
